My fertility journey has been one filled with surprises. I want to share my experience with PCOS, the ups, the down and get the not so bitter part. I was diagnosed with PCOS quite early, during my late teens before I had my first boyfriend. The diagnosis didn't really come as a surprise because of my symptoms, the signs were already there. I didn't know what it was, I just assumed I was a freak of nature.
To make matters worse my period were irregular. I have gone three years with a single drop of blood from my vagina. When I was diagnosed, I was placed on medications and diet plan and things started to get better a bit. The stress of suffering from PCOS was too much for a teenager to handle. I was bullied a lot in school. I had very few friends, because no one wanted to associate with me. I was called a freak of nature because of the hair I had sticking out of my face. I realized quite early that majority of people do not even know what PCOS is, so those with PCOS are treated unfairly because of the unflattering symptoms. There is a stigma on the awareness and the stigma isn't broken, more harm would be done. PCOS really affected my mental health as a teenager, but with time I became comfortable in my body. With the help of my doctor, we reversed the symptoms, and I even conceived through IVF. My journey is not over, but it has become easier. Let's spread awareness of this condition this month and lift the stigma that is on it.
